On Monday 21 July at 9.55 a.m. West Indonesian Time, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made history as the first men to step on the Moon's surface.
From the moment the spaceship Apollo 11 left the Earth, at 8.32 p.m on July 16, the journey to the Moon had been fill of tense moments because, in the last ten miles before landing, the computer of the ship's navigation system warned that it was being asked to do too much work. This could have caused failure. Fortunately, this problem was immediately solved
Broadcast on live TV to a world-wide audience, Neil Armstrong, the astronaut lifted his foot from the landing pad of his ship, and slowly and carefully, stepped onto the Moon's surface. He found out thtat he could move easily. Cofidently, he moved slowly away from his ship. He was greatly surprised to see his footprints in the soft lunar sand. Taking a look at the view around him, Armstrong remarked, " It's not only different, but it's also pretty out here."
Twenty minutes later Edwin,Aldrin,Armstrong's fellow astronaut, joined him. Both were so pleased with their new experience that they almost forgot to collect a few samples of lunar soil. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft and collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar materials for return to Earth for observation.
Apollo 11 effectively marked the end of the space race with Soviets. The success of the Moon Landing showed that U.S. technology was superior to that of the Soviets.
